Pretty much what it says, I brought the AR five transmission home and removed the Bell housing. The only thing interesting that happens is the transmission rolled over in the back of the truck bed and I got transmission fluid all over the truck bed which took me forever to clean up.
As the title says, today I installed the Cloyes C-3220 timing kit including chain, cam sprocket, crank sprocket from Rock Auto, and also installed a Melling High pressure oil pump 10295 from Summit Racing. Not much else to say🤷‍♂️.
Got the pistons (ENGINETECHÂ P5036) back from the shop mounted to the rod, so now was the time to install the piston rings (HASTINGS MANUFACTURINGÂ 2M4978), and rod bearings (MAHLE / CLEVITEÂ CB663P8). I had ordered a tapered piston ring compressor (SME-903780) from Summit so I used that.
Took apart the valve heads and removed the valves, springs and valve seals. used a tool I got off amazon, that worked ok, but I needed to buy an better qulality threaded rod that wouldn’t strip from the local bolt supply store. Glad I got the threaded rod, because it too would strip and I needed to cut new lengths from time to time.
Next was valve lapping. I had a bit of trouble getting the valve lapping suction cup to stick to the rough surface of the valves. I smoothed them out with scotch brite, then painted them to get a smooth surface. After this the suction up stuck well, and the paint gave a good indication of how much grinding was done and how smooth the surface looked. Even after significant grinding/lapping there were some remaining pits. Didn’t want to lap further to go past the specs. No perfect, but better than it was before. I checked for leaks, and there were none. This is as much as I’m going to do. If it needs redoing, I guess I’ll redo it.
After giving the engine a last wipe down I installed the original camshaft, then the new Mahle/Clevite MS2199P crankshaft bearings from rockauto.com, and the crankshaft. torqued everything down and it spins freely.
Enginetech Pistons P5036 I ordered from rock auto arrived. They look good to me, but what do I know. Tomorrow I’ll take these and the old pistons and rods to get switched over.
Picked up the engine, crankshaft and pistons from the engine shop.
Engine: I got the camshaft bearings changed and the block inspected. Shop says block is good cylinders could use a deglaze/slight honing, and actually asked why I took it apart.🫤anyway it’s got new cam bearings. Cleaned up everything looks good.
Crankshaft: shop says crankshaft is good, could use a deglaze. I declined.
Pistons: piston shirts are worn 0.004” and they recommend replacement. After looking at the pistons, I agree.
Called the engine shop to ask if they can inspect the cam bearings and replace if necessary. They said that the engine needs to be to completely torn down including the rotating assembly. Bummer, because I really didn’t want to.
Anyway stripped it all down and took it to the engine shop for them to inspect the block, including the cam bearings, inspect the crankshaft, and inspect the pistons, and let me know what they find now they said it would take about three weeks.
Stripped down the engine, removed crank and removed pistons. Bearings look good to me. didn’t want to do it but engine shop wanted a stripped block to look at.
